When the end was near and extreme unction administered, St. Thomas Aquinas pronounced this act of faith:
He who does not meditate acts as one who never looks into the mirror and so does not bother to put himself in order, since he can be dirty without knowing it. The person who meditates and turns his thoughts to God who is the mirror of the soul, seeks to know his defects and tries to correct them, moderates himself in his impulses and puts his conscience in order.
It is impossible for a person who prays regularly to remain in serious sin; because the two are incompatible, one or the other will have to be given up.
You strayed from the way and did not return because you were ashamed. It would be more logical if you were ashamed not to return.
Some false and pernicious ideas on immodest dress prevail in the world and lead into error souls desirous to do right. Remember, therefore, it matters not how many others sin, yours can never be justified before God, and where it is fashionable to sin it is likewise the fashion to go to hell. The choice is always yours to make.
The highest degree of meekness consists in seeing, serving, honoring, and treating amiably, on occasion, those who are not to our taste, and who show themselves unfriendly, ungrateful, and troublesome to us.
A man who governs his passions is master of the world. We must either command them, or be enslaved by them. It is better to be a hammer than an anvil..
The more we have denied ourselves during the day, the nearer we are each evening to the heart of our Lord.
Oh how precious time is! Blessed are those who know how to make good use of it. Who can assure us that we will be alive tommorow? Let us listen to the voice of our conscience, to the voice of the royal prophet: "Today if you hear God's voice, harden not your heart." Let us not put off for one moment to another what we "should" do, because the next moment is not yet ours!
The Church herself is a field, within which seeds and weeds, the good and the wicked, grow together, a place where there is room to grow, to be converted and above all to imitate God's patience. The wicked exist in this world either to be converted or that through them the good may exercise patience.
No one can live without delight, and that is why a man deprived of spiritual joy goes over to carnal pleasures.
